Whether you’re visiting for summer hikes or winter slopes, there’s always something exciting to do. Take a moment to discover what’s waiting in Breckenridge and the surrounding areas, and start dreaming up what your next Colorado adventure will look like. From key seasonal activities to the best restaurants and entertainment, we’re giving you a local’s guide at the best things to do when you visit.

Know Before You Go

Breckenridge is more than just a ski town, and if it’s your first time visiting, there are some key things to note that will help you prepare. First, this part of Colorado receives about 300 days of sunshine a year, so even when it’s cold outside, things like sunscreen, glasses, and hats are important.

Next, if you’ve never experienced a significant altitude change, understanding how to prep can make for a smooth transition. Breckenridge is higher than most Colorado areas, at 9,600 feet. Drinking lots of water, especially if you’re going to be enjoying the town’s craft beer scene or you love caffeine, will help ward off altitude sickness. Try to match each alcoholic or caffeinated drink with a glass of water. Additionally, don't overdo it right out of the gate. Give yourself a day or two to acclimatize.

Another thing you’ll notice is that shop bags aren’t free. To save yourself the .50 cent fee at stores and restaurants, take a reusable tote. This commitment to reducing waste is just one of many ways Breckenridge is working to preserve the area’s magnificence for generations to come.

Lastly, the Main Street Trolley provides free transportation in downtown Breckenridge, making it easy to explore without a car!

Year Round Activities

Breckenridge is certainly renowned for its impeccable skiing and snowboarding, so it’s no surprise winter is one of the most popular times to visit. Beyond downhill skiing, winter sports lovers can also enjoy dog sledding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing!

In summer, ski slopes become well-trodden hiking and mountain biking paths. Rivers run with whitewater rapids, perfect for rafting adventures. If you prefer a slower pace, fly fishing for trout, and Kokanee salmon is a time-honored tradition. It’s also a great time to practice your golf swing and see the difference thin air has on your game!

Fall coats the mountains in stunning shades of vibrant yellow and gold as the Aspens change; it’s also a great time for scenic road trips.

History and Culture

Breckenridge is home to a thriving arts district, culinary scene, and unique historic treasures. Spend an afternoon learning about the town’s mining history when you make the short drive to the Montezuma Ghost Town. Get in touch with your creative side at an art workshop from the Breckenridge Creative Arts team. Indulge in exquisite après ski experiences and restaurants that celebrate flavors and styles from all around the world. Enjoy live entertainment at local theaters and live music venues from Riverwalk Center to cozy local bars. No matter what you want to do during your visit, you can find it here in Breckenridge.
